The first time that I ever saw SPOOK, was when she was being shown as a 2 year old in the Western Counties Non-Pro Futurity in Santa Rosa. She placed well and at the time was a steel gray color.
She was shown by Lori Pabst and was trained by Bob Kail. As I recall she beat the horse I was showing at the time. Everyone thought that I was crazy... they said she cannot be sound, she was ring sorer, and just an old gray mare. Boy did she proof them wrong.
It was not until many years later that our paths crossed again, this time it would again be in Santa Rosa at the Spring Time Classic Horse sale. She had been sold by Lori and her owner had died so she was placed in a sale. CUPCAKE as she was know then, was a AQHA Champion, with over 100 AQHA points in numerous events, both Open and Amateur events. She was selling as Lot # 1 she was slick and shiny and sold with a breeding to INA DIFFERENT LEAGUE. I never thought when I purchased her that I would become so attached or that she would bring me so many hours of riding and enjoyment. Then for my granddaughter to be able to show her and win numerous awards was a real BONUS.
By now SPOOK, as I soon came to realize that I could not have a horse named CUPCAKE, so she in time got the name SPOOK. Can any one guess why????? At the time I owned Blackhawk Equestrian Center, and had decided to take her for a ride around the ranch.... and what a ride it was... she spooked at everything and I mean everything. Thus her name SPOOK..... it took her a while to realize that she had found her final home and was going to be treat to the kindness and caring that she deserved.
I always looked forward to riding her in our Wednesday riding lesson with Cheryl Busick. I did everything with her from trail obstacles, to Western Pleasure to Reining. I learned all the reining patterns on her. She was a great lead changer and the closest I ever got to that western riding horse I wanted. I had a number of other horses at the time so they were my show horses, SPOOK was my riding horse and my best friend. I soon took her out on trail rides on Mt. Diablo her first trail ride was a real exciting experience. SPOOK was also riding by a number of the young riders at Blackhawk, everyone wanted to ride her. She started more than one rider that went on to be a star. The Blackhawk Equestrian Christmas party SPOOK was a star. She did everything and was usually the winner. In 1996 the ranch was sold to a developer and I brought SPOOK to my stable at my home in Alamo. She settled right in and was the barn leader, if she was not fed first she would paw at the stall, she was always demanding but in a good way.
She lived here at my home stable, her best buddy was one of my ponies called LILLY. The morning I went down to the barn to check on the animals I immediately knew something was wrong..... SPOOK did not paw on her stall door. I found her at the end of her large paddock. LIlly was with her and I knew that day something was terribly wrong with her. She was 21 years old at the time but looked like a 2 year old. We called the vet Dr. Corey Soltau, who gave her medication, he was to return at the end of the day to check her. My daughter Laura and I moved her out to the arena from her stall, I noticed her shoulder did not look right. When Dr Soltau arrived I had him look at it and he found it was broken, everyone's heart dropped but we knew that SPOOK would have to be put down. With heavy heart, and tearful eyes we were with her to the end, she is now buried in the arena and we have a memorial to her in the side yard. LILLY her pony buddy mourned her for months, looking out where she was buried. SPOOK will always be remembered and missed by many. It is said that there is always one special horse that enters your heart and will never be forgotten that is SPOOK. She now rests in peace. |
